  • Q&A: Purchasing a used EV with Eco cars

Published on January 4th 2023

Searching for a used electric vehicle can be time consuming and confusing. That's where Eco cars comes in. Our team helps to source used EVs at auction, tailored to each customer's interest.

Find out more in our interview with Eco cars and ReFLEX Orkney team member Gyles Poulton:

What trends are you seeing on the used car market?
There seems to be a cooling of prices at auction just now, so we are not seeing the month-on-month price rises that we were previously. We are seeing more Nissan Leaf e+ (200-mile range) and there are Kia e-Niro’s at auction now, too.

Can you give a couple examples of different budgets and the cars you're finding that fit those budgets?

  • £12k-£18k Kia Soul 27kWh- 30kWh
  • £18k+ Nissan Leaf 40kWh N-Connecta
  • £26k+ Nissan Leaf e+ 62kWh
  • £30k + Kia E-Niro

What do you need from a customer to get started?
We ask for your contact details, budget, any options you want and the distance you drive, for example 30 miles round trip to work with an occasional 100-mile trip.

What is the process of working with Eco cars?
After enquiring, you can expect a call back to talk through your budget and the options available, as well as an explanation of the Eco cars buying process. Our team looks for cars every day and will send any that look suitable, plus advise on setting a maximum bid. Once we’ve won an EV at auction, we register and tax your new car plus help arrange collection or delivery.

Given the rise in cost of electricity, are EVs still an economical choice?
With the cost at the petrol pump still high, switching to an EV makes a lot of sense. I personally made the switch to an EV for our family’s car just over a year ago and would not go back. Our Leaf is cheaper, more reliable and, as a rural Orkney resident, charging at home is more convenient than the 25-mile round trip to the nearest petrol station we used to make.

How can customers connect with Eco cars?
We are keeping the website Eco-cars.net up to date, and you can sign up to our EV alerts newsletter for regular updates. You an also contact us through regular ReFLEX Orkney channels.
