In our ‘Meet the Team’ series, we’ll get to know a member of the ReFLEX Orkney team and their ‘why’ in helping to decarbonise the local energy system in Orkney.

Job role: Customer Engagement Officer

Started working for ReFLEX: December 2023

What role do you play amongst your team? I think I'm the team's entertainer, bringing humour to keep my colleagues engaged and smiling.

Q: What’s your role within the customer service team?

My role, as the name suggests, is all about engaging with customers, helping them find the service they are looking for through ReFLEX. I check the inbox every day and respond to customer’s queries that come through, attending calls and arranging call-backs for customers. I also take part in online car auctions, which can be really exciting and fast-paced. I bid for cars for our customers, and I arrange all the details and next steps following a win, to get the car to our customer.

Q: How many customers have you helped through ReFLEX so far?

I have probably, over the last few of months, attended over 70 customers, we get a lot of queries.

Q: What led you to join the ReFLEX team?

I came to Orkney from India to complete my master’s in marine Renewable Energy, at Herriot Watt University. At first, I really wasn’t sure about Orkney, being a remote island far from the big cities. However, over time, Orkney grew on me, and I developed a genuine affection for this place. I was deeply touched by how quickly I was embraced by the community, which is exceptionally close-knit and special here. I feel at home here, which keeps homesickness at bay.

I was certain that I wanted to extend my stay in Orkney and explore opportunities to apply the knowledge and skills I acquired during my master’s program, particularly within the impressive renewables’ scene here.

Q: What’s your favourite thing about living in Orkney?

The scenic beauty of Orkney is truly just amazing. Living right by the sea offers me the privilege of waking up to breathtaking island views every day, which feels like a dream come true. Orkney's abundant wildlife, particularly the sight of seals, adds to the charm of this place.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of life in Orkney is the sense of community. From small gatherings like Harvest Home to larger events such as the Orkney Music Festival, there's always a strong sense of belonging.

While it may not be a popular opinion, I have a deep appreciation for Orkney's charm, especially during snowy winters. This year, with heavy snowfall, Orkney has taken on a magical, almost enchanting atmosphere, like the world of Narnia.

Q: What’s one thing you’ve learned since joining ReFLEX?

I've discovered that I possess more patience than I initially realised, thanks to my experience in customer service. My time in this role has expanded my knowledge of cars, particularly electric vehicles, beyond my expectations. Previously, I thought of relying on my parents or others for assistance when purchasing a car. However, now I feel confident in my ability to do this process independently.

It’s great how the conversation has been opened about renewable energy systems, and seeing it literally happening as we speak, through ReFLEX. It gives me a lot of confidence.

Q: What’s the ReFLEX service you are most excited about?

I find it really exciting to help customers find the car they truly need or want, meeting their criteria and ensuring they get exactly what they were looking for. It gives me great satisfaction. Happy Customers, happy job life.

Q: How have you seen interest grow in the community around ReFLEX Orkney’s renewable services?

In Orkney, there's a strong awareness of climate change and the vital role of renewable energy in addressing it. Orkney is a great example of a place where renewable energy is growing rapidly. In Orkney, electric cars are becoming increasingly common or high in demand. Orkney's smaller land area and shorter travel distances make electric cars more practical and desirable for residents.

Q: When you think of the ‘Energy of Orkney’ what comes to mind?

For me, it's the combination of both the people and the technology. Orkney stands as a beacon in Scotland's efforts towards decarbonisation, hosting a thriving hub for renewable energy right in the heart of the northern isles. It's the dedicated individuals who are driving this exciting transformation.

Q: When not working, where in Orkney can we find you?

When not working, if the weather permits, you'll often find me by the sea at Ness Point in Stromness, gazing out at the horizon where the Atlantic Ocean meets the sky beyond the hills of Hoy, or finding peace in its rhythmic waves by meditating on the beach. On clear nights, I love stargazing in Orkney. The unpolluted atmosphere here offers some of the best views of the night sky—it's like the perfect canvas for the stars. Or else, you'll find me at home, either engaging in lively games with flatmates or friends, or simply unwinding with a good movie or engaging in video calls with family.
