The ReFLEX Orkney project is one of three demonstrator projects, match funded by UKRI through the Prospering From an Energy Revolution (PFER) Programme, aiming to accelerate innovation in smart local energy systems (SLES).

We hosted a webinar on 3 April 2023 discussing all things ReFLEX Orkney, looking back over the past four years of the project and the next steps for Orkney on it's mission to decarbonise by 2030.

ReFLEX Orkney project partners discussed the findings from the project, shared some data analysis as well as highlight the challenges and learnings from trying to implement a SLES in Orkney.

Whilst ultimately the current energy system isn’t quite ready to make the leap we had been aiming for, we know that this is what will be needed in the future as the world moves away from it’s fossil fuel dependency. ReFLEX identified many barriers to SLES implementation and Orkney will build on the learning from the ReFLEX Orkney project as we continue our endeavour to demonstrate the energy system of the future.

The project was led by EMEC with cross-sector partners including Aquatera, SMS, Community Energy Scotland, Heriot-Watt University and Orkney Islands Council.
